Impossible to enclose in a few lines all the millennia of history that the wonderful historic centre of Monopoli holds.
Monopoli was already inhabited in prehistoric times and already in the fifth century BC. was a fortified city of the ancient Apulian population of the Messapi.
The entire old town, with its early medieval imprint, deserves an in-depth visit in itself, to explore the intricate streets that, especially in the evening, are crowded with life. Numerous restaurants with outdoor tables, often offer, as a good seaside town, the fresh catch of the day. But not only that: there is something for every type of palate.
Monopoli retains part of the ancient sixteenth-century walls along the coastal side. So treat yourself to a pleasant stroll along the seafront. Along with the Castle of Charles V, the sumptuous noble palaces, the wonderful churches, to end along with the old port and in Garibaldi square, the heart of the old city.

If you are passionate about archaeology, both in the centre and in the countryside, Monopoli preserves numerous rock churches and archaeological sites of considerable interest.
Finally, the beaches deserve, starting from Largo Porta Vecchia, just outside the city walls. The city coast is dotted with pretty coves that can offer an original variant to the classic exploration of an Old Town.
